Regular Teeth Cleaning & Check Up

Some people consider teeth cleaning & check-up visits as unimportant and often allow scheduled exams to pass by.  However, regular dental check-ups are as important as any major or necessary dental treatment.  Dental patients should have at least two dental check-ups and cleanings each year, which include various dental services vital to sustaining long-term oral health.

Scott Condie Dentistry advises that healthy adults and teens should have their teeth professionally cleaned at least once every 6 months. Some patients require additional check-ups and professional teeth cleaning depending on the health of the teeth and gums. More visits may be necessary if you are a smoker, have braces, or have a history of gum infections. Ask Dr. Condie or his dental hygienist how often you should schedule your cleanings.

Teeth Cleaning – What To Expect During Your Visit

With each dental check-up, you may need x-rays in addition to the prophylaxis (cleaning) phase of your visit.  Your Dental Hygienist will examine your teeth and gums and proceed to get rid of cavity forming hard and soft deposits on the teeth caused by plaque, tarter, calculus or stains.

The main reason for regular dental check-ups and teeth cleaning is the prevention of gum disease. The problem is common and one of the primary ways to minimize damage to the teeth and gums is to see your dentist regularly. When periodontal (gum) disease is present, this means that there is a minor problem of gum inflammation or could be a more serious problem causing damage to soft tissue or even bone that supports the teeth. In the worst cases there can be the loss of teeth.

The typical visit for patients with good oral health involves removing stains and or harmful deposits from teeth using air polish (air, water, and baking soda spray) plus tooth polishing paste and floss to lift residual stains and deposits from teeth. This procedure is designed to reduce bacteria and strengthen the teeth against decay. The active element is fluoride, which aids in building strong teeth and preserves tooth enamel. Patients also have the option to get an additional fluoride treatment to further improve oral health.
