How a Dental Exam Can Prevent Gum Disease
A dental exam goes a long way when it comes to preventing issues like gum disease and tooth decay. Dentists recommend coming in for a check-up at least two times a year, and some people might have to come in more frequently if they have existing issues, like gum disease. A dental exam gives your dentist a chance to perform the preventative dental treatments that you need, to diagnose existing issues, and to provide any necessary treatments.
How a dental exam helps prevent gum disease and other oral issues
Gum disease is caused by oral bacteria that can also lead to tooth decay. These germs dine on the sugars in food particles left on teeth, and they convert them into plaque and acids that damage teeth. Plaque promotes gum disease and tooth decay, but it can be easily removed by brushing and flossing.
When plaque is left on teeth surfaces for extended periods, it hardens into tartar, which also promotes tooth decay. However, tartar cannot be removed with brushing or flossing. The bristles of a toothbrush are simply not hard enough to get it off teeth, and if even they were, they would probably damage teeth enamel.
A dentist can remove tartar with a metal hand tool called a scaler. The process is called teeth cleaning and is a standard part of dental cleanings. If tartar is left to accumulate on teeth surfaces, some of it will make its way into gum pockets.
Gum disease is caused by plaque and tartar bacteria getting into those gum pockets. The immune system recognizes these microorganisms as invaders and sends antibodies to eliminate them. The result of the microscopic battle is typically irritation and inflammation of gum tissues. Over time, this chronic inflammation of gum tissues leads to gum and bone tissues supporting teeth becoming damaged. This loosens teeth and they can fall out. Let us take a closer look at the treatments performed during a dental exam and how they protect patients against gum disease.
1. Teeth cleaning
This is performed to get rid of tartar and plaque from teeth surfaces. The dentist also flosses for the patient during the procedure to make sure their interdental spaces are clean. Teeth cleaning procedures are often finished by polishing the patient’s teeth.
Teeth cleanings protect teeth against gum disease and tooth decay. They can also be used to help reverse the early stage of gum disease, called gingivitis.
A check-up also provides an opportunity for the dentist to evaluate the health of the patient’s teeth and gums. A probe can be used to measure the depths of gum pockets, which is a good way to determine if a patient has gum disease. Diagnostics like X-rays can also be used to evaluate the patient’s gum tissues.
