BECOME A TOOTH BRUSHING ROCK STAR

That’s right, you too can be a tooth brushing rock star! When we are young, we typically learn how to brush our teeth from our parents or an older sibling. Their bad habits can be passed on and practiced for many years (or a lifetime) if not corrected by your family dentist or further education. We want to share with you a few tips that will make your brushing experience more efficient and effective.

2 MINUTES TWICE PER DAY

While two minutes might seem like a long time, if you are thorough and spend time on each tooth, the time will fly by. We’ve found the best way is to break your brushing up into four sections, for the four different quarters of your mouth, 30 seconds each. Many electric toothbrushes have built-in timers which can aid in this process.

SELECTING THE RIGHT TOOTHBRUSH

The key here is finding a toothbrush that fits well with the size of your mouth. If you find your jaw muscles are strained after your brushing, likely your brush is too big. Also, select the right stiffness of the bristles to match the sensitivity of your gums. Usually, a soft brush is best (but that is an individual preference). Electric toothbrushes can make it easier to do an efficient job and typically come with different heads to match your preference.

SELECT THE RIGHT TOOTHPASTE

Trusty old fluoride toothpaste is usually the best choice. Whitening, and tartar control pastes, while have their place, should not replace the proven formula. If you do use those type of specialty toothpastes, switch them out every once in awhile to make sure they aren’t having harsh or damaging effects on your enamel.

With these few tips, you are well on your way to a brighter, happier smile.
